PROCEDURE & FEES FOR PORTRAITS
Each portrait begins with a meeting so that the artist can begin to understand the subjects of the painting. A casual arrangement such as meeting for coffee or for a walk in the park helps me to understand the nature of the people involved,
their personalities and mannerisms. It is through this process that I can begin to think about setting, composition, and dress. At the first meeting, we can discuss
your goals for the image, and important impressions you'd like to convey. Casual snapshots will be taken at this time. A 30% non-refundable deposit is due at the time of the contract signing.
After the first meeting, I'll use my notes and the snapshots to create characteristic studies and compositions wherein the impressions gained of your personality are clarified and interpreted. Several sketches of potential compositions will be produced from this
effort, for your consideration. Usually the sketches can be sent by email and discussed by phone, though a face-to-face meeting is preferable. Based on these sketches, you will select the composition you feel best suits your needs for the portrait, and a sitting appointment will be made.
At the sitting appointment, we will attempt to recreate the composition sketches in life, though of course modifications are always made. If the setting is to be outdoors, we will meet outdoors. If the setting is to be an interior, we will create the necessary arrangement of props and lighting. 50-100 photos will be taken to aid in the creation of the
portrait. While the portrait is not a "copy" of these photos, their use is invaluable since most people today do not have the time or patience to sit for the 60+ hours it takes to complete the work.
Using the photos and sketches already created, a rough color sketch, perhaps 1/2 size will be created for your approval demonstrating the tone, color, and overall composition of the project. Edits are at the discretion of the artist. If accepted, a 30% payment is required at this time and I will move on to the final project. The final payment is due upon acceptance of the
completed, cured and varnished painting.
Your portrait will be painted using archival, museum-quality oil paint, mediums, and varnishes. It will last for dozens, perhaps hundreds of years with little maintenance, and become a treasured family heirloom.

Sizes are dependent on the composition selected. In general, I prefer to work with near-lifesize compositions. Frames and travel outside 100 miles are not included. At present, it will take 6-8 months to receive your completed portrait.
